6 Best Business Books Worth Your Time

Business Books for 2017

How Can You Find the Time?

You barely have enough time to make it through your email much less read an entire book.  Not only that, you prefer to "do" instead of read.  Why waste time reading someone else's opinion on how you can be successful? You aren't dumb.  You know that hard work and determination are the keys to success no matter what you don't know.

Or are they?

What if being passionate about your product isn't enough? What if you don't have the knowledge of how to address customer complaints? What if the work you are doing is just average? Do you stand out in a crowd?

What if all you had to do was read about 5 pages a day? Can you invest that time in exchange for having a more successful business?

I have consolidated the best business books to read down to these 6. The 6 books listed below cover a lot of bases. About 1 every 2 months, with a little extra time to account for emergencies (i.e. You spend all night drinking beer and watching The Walking Dead).

How can anyone be writing business books that are different than all of those we have already read? Somehow, these people manage to rise above the norm and provide insightful, intriguing and candid business advice and tips.

1)  #AskGaryVee: One Entrepreneur's Take on Leadership, Social Media and Self-Awareness - Gary Vaynerchuk

Gary Vaynerchuk is a hustler.  He will teach you how to hustle and be several steps ahead of everyone else. If you like brash honesty, you will get it here. This book is essentially an extension of his YouTube show #AskGaryVee. His advice isn't just for business but it is also for life improvement.  His stuff isn't what he wants to talk about, the book and the show are all answers to questions he has been asked along the way.  If you don't like to read, this is about as easy as they come.

Are you sensitive to criticism? Then this isn't for you.

Do you want to hear candid answers to all your startup questions? Then this is for you.

Are you ready to meet the challenges of business today? Be prepared for a wild ride!

2) Main Street Entrepreneur - Michael Glauser

Michael Glauser is an entrepreneur, business consultant, and university professor.  After conducting over 100 interviews and visiting 100 cities, Michael is able to tell us what makes a successful entrepreneur.  He is not suggesting you build a big goliath company like Facebook or Google but he shows that you can find success right in your hometown and he gives real life examples of how this has been done. This is a very easy read, just a little more than 200 pages.

Glauser has distilled hours of interviews and research to present the nine keys for:

Building a purpose-driven business

• Meeting important community needs

• Developing a supporting cast

• Working with a zealous tenacity

• Giving mind-boggling customer service

• Diversifying revenue streams

• Giving back to the broader community

• And ultimately, creating the lifestyle of your dreams

3) Resonate: Present Visual Stories that Transform Audiences - Nancy Duarte

You may wonder, how can you use a book about telling visual stories in your new business?  In actuality, you shouldn't start a business without reading this book (or at least understanding the concept).

In today's competitive world, your brand has to stick out.  You have to show why you should do the job. If you can't explain to people why they should buy from you, then you are out of business.

Just explaining your product or service (and having a passion for it) doesn't cut it anymore.  You have to show how the thing you are selling can change people's lives! What is the STORY of your product?

This book actually demonstrates what is preaches.  It is full of beautiful pictures (that tell amazing stories) and each section has a very solid and interesting case study that anyone can learn from.  You will easily see after you read the book how telling a story can change the way you market your product. This is very easy to read because of the way the book is presented.

4) Hug Your Haters - Jay Baer

Every business gets complaints. No matter how hard you try to make experiences with your company perfect, there are always going to be people that aren't satisfied.  These aren't the people you should be ignoring.  These are the people that teach you the valuable things you need to know about your business.

These days it is easy for a complaint to go viral.  However, this is also the opportunity to shine and show to a much larger audience why you are the best!

This person's review summarizes the book quite nicely...

By the way, does the name of this reviewer sound familiar? This review is from Marcus Sheridan - President of the Sales Lion.  This guy knows what he is talking about!

4) Sprint - Jake Knapp

You have a great new idea for your business but you think it will take months (if not years) to test out if it will work.  As a new business owner, it is hard for you to put in that much time.  In today's world, you just can't afford a year or more to implement new ideas.

Three guys from Google wrote this practical guide for solving critical business questions. It is a process developed so that you can go from idea to prototype in 5 days! This book is full of tools and checklists you can use with your team to get started right away.

6) Born for This - Chris Guillebeau

This is a RA-RA, make-you-feel-good book. Read this when you feel the need for a little pick me up. Chris is good at telling motivational stories. In this book, he will get you looking at your life in a different way. All followed with practical tips and real-life examples. The premise of the book is that you need three key things in your work to win the "career lottery":

1) Joy

2) Money

3) Flow
